The Waitress

The Waitress is an ordinary cafe and that is the whole appeal. The menu is short, steak, omelette, salad and a couple of others, with soda or coffee alongside, and nothing about it is exotic.

What it asks for is housekeeping rather than cooking. You take the order, carry it to the chef, bring the food out, clear the waste before the next customer sits down and wash the plates at the sink, and the rubbish goes to the bin.

It is a Flash game from the early 2010s running here through an emulator, and it plays slower than a modern time-management game, which is most of why people still look for it.

How to play The Waitress

Order, kitchen, serve, clear

  • Take the order at the table. Nothing else happens until the chef has it.
  • Carry it through and pick the food up when it is ready rather than waiting beside the pass.
  • Serve, then clear the plates on your way past. A dirty table cannot seat the next customer.
  • Wash up at the sink and take the rubbish out before either piles up.

Controls

Mouse only. The game is Flash through an emulator with no touch support, so a phone will show the cafe but cannot work it. Clicking moves the waitress and picks things up.

Tips and strategy

Clear on the way rather than as a job of its own: every trip back to the kitchen should carry something. The sink and the bin are the two things that quietly stop the room working, and both are easy to leave until they have already cost a table. There is no timer on a shift, so the queue is the only clock.
